One of Miami’s and the Grove’s Most Important Black Leaders
George A. Simpson, Sr., Florida’s first Black, board-certified general surgeon and a former president of the Miami branch of the NAACP, died on Feb. 20, 2024, at the age of 98.
A funeral service was held at Christ Episcopal Church in the West Grove on Saturday March 9.
Dr. Simpson had a decades-long career not just as a prominent Miami physician but as a civil rights leader and an advocate of affordable housing.
He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Dazelle Dean, a member of the family descended from E.W.F. Stirrup, one of Miami’s early settlers and a wealthy landowner whose home on Charles Ave. has been lovingly restored and is often used for local events. In 1953, Dr. Dean Simpson became the first Black female pediatrician in Miami.
