Dear Friends,
We’re thrilled to share some extraordinary news: The Coconut Grove Spotlight has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the Alberto Ibargüen Excellence in Journalism Award, a $15,000 unrestricted grant made possible by the MacArthur Foundation and administered through The Miami Foundation.
This honor was bestowed upon us by Alberto Ibargüen himself – a towering figure in American journalism and a respected community leader in Miami – as part of the 2025 Esserman-Knight Journalism Awards.
In selecting our newsroom, Mr. Ibargüen recognized our commitment to “excellence, integrity, and public service” – values that lie at the heart of everything we do.
This award is both a milestone and a motivator. It tells us we’re on the right path – shining a light on the issues that matter most to our community, holding power to account, and telling stories that reflect the heart and soul of Coconut Grove and beyond.
But none of this would be possible without you – our readers and neighbors – who believe in the power of independent, local journalism. As a nonprofit newsroom, the principal source of support, and funding, will always be those within our community who share this vision.
If you value the work we do and want to help us grow, please consider making a donation today. Your support ensures we can continue reporting deeply, asking tough questions, and publishing stories that make a difference.

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps. Thank you for your ongoing trust and encouragement – and for making the Spotlight a newsroom worthy of this remarkable honor.
With gratitude,
The Coconut Grove Spotlight Team
