Friends and relatives are mourning the passing of Elizabeth (Liz) Campanile Gibson, who died in Miami from complications of breast cancer on October 18. Liz was born in Asbury Park, N.J. She moved to Coconut Grove as a child in 1951, where she attended Coconut Grove Elementary School, Coral Gables High School, and Barry College. She married Walter (Gibby) Gibson. Together they raised two sons – Walter Brian Gibson Jr. and John Lee Gibson. Her husband died in 2013, and she built a life with her dedicated life partner, Richard Henderson, and the many dogs they loved.
Liz worked for the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department. She was an artist known for her painted rocks at the Gifford Lane Art Stroll, an activist for Save the Coconut Grove Playhouse, an original member of the Coconut Grove Drum Circle, and an organizer of the King Mango Strut parade. A celebration of her life will take place on Friday November 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, 2985 South Bayshore Drive. All who knew Liz are encouraged to attend and share memories and stories.
