Summer is packing up and the concert calendars are spilling onto the table. Theaters are announcing their seasons, the concert halls are tuning up, and a remarkable amount of what’s coming is free, nearly free or cheap enough that there’s really no excuse to stay home.
So start filling in your calendar. Some of the best seats disappear long before the curtain goes up, and this week we’ve gathered the dates worth circling now—from free concerts and pay-what-you-wish performances to new theater seasons and neighborhood favorites. Friday August 28
Hit RESET. Three performers use extreme gestures, absurdist humor and mesmerizing physical precision to explore what happens when people—like overloaded machines—need to shut down, clear the errors and start again. This physical theater stays rooted in the stubbornly human virtues of imperfection, vulnerability and resilience. Free valet parking. Vizcaya Village Market. Vizcaya’s eclectic farmers market runs on adjusted summer hours through September 27, with local vendors offering fresh-made delicacies, handcrafted goods, fruits and vegetables, baked goods, and vegan products inside Vizcaya’s historic farm village. Hot Yoga Is Hip. How about humid too? For five bucks, unroll your mat at Vizcaya Village for an all-levels Sunday morning wellness class alongside the farmers market. Bring your mat and water bottle, and embrace the fact that Mother Nature provides the heated studio for free. The $5 admission also gets you $5 off a same-day visit to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Catch a Rising Starlet. The Grove’s own—and perhaps youngest—published author, Emilia Ramos Sampler, 16, has released Valaztein, the third book in the fantasy saga she first published when she was just 10. Emilia will talk about her books, writing and the unusual business of being a teen author at Tea & Poets. A fun chance to meet a very young neighbor who already has three books on the shelf. Wednesday September 2
Free Tutoring and Homework Help. Miami-Dade County Library System’s free online and in-person tutoring sessions begin this week with support in reading, math and science for K-12 students. Led by certified teachers, the sessions help students sharpen their skills, build confidence and boost performance. Online one-on-one Tutoring: Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m., through May. In-person group tutoring on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 28 library locations (including Shenandoah and Virrick Park) through May. First Draft. A new monthly open-mic night is starting at Emissary Café, giving Grove writers, storytellers and other brave souls three minutes to get something new, rough or vulnerable out into the world. Read in English or Spanish, or just grab a coffee or glass of wine and listen while somebody else takes the risk. Sign-ups start at 6:30 p.m.; the mic opens at 7. Friday September 4
Gallery Night, With a Side of Gossip. After the sun goes down and things cool off, head over to Coral Gables for its monthly First Friday Gallery Night, when galleries around Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Miracle Mile stay open from 6 to 10 p.m. with new art, music and complimentary drinks. Sure, you can study the exhibitions, but it’s also a fine excuse to wander around, bump into friends and catch up on the summer gossip with a glass of wine in hand. And here’s the cheap-date bonus: take the free Miami trolley to the 37th Avenue Metrorail station, then catch another free trolley north into downtown Coral Gables. 9/4.
You Don’t Have to Be a Cane — but it Helps. The Hurricanes take on Stanford, and you don’t need a UM diploma to join the game-watch crowd at Lost Boy Dry Goods. Wear orange and green, and cheer, groan and second-guess the play calling with a roomful of people who are football experts once kickoff arrives. Free. Lost Boy Dry Goods, 157 E. Grovites For Life Annual Gala. A fundraising dinner with live entertainment at Virrick Park, 3255 Plaza Street. A Star-Spangled Start to the Season. Frost Music Live opens its season with the Frost Wind Ensemble celebrating America’s 250th anniversary through music that has helped define the American sound. No Podium Required. America’s 250th gets personal in a one-hour, 10-person conversation built around sharing stories, listening with curiosity and finding what still connects us. We’re All About High-Quality Nights Out. The Frost Jazz Orchestra and Studio Jazz Band fill Gusman Concert Hall with the full power of the big-band sound, led by John Daversa and Etienne Charles and powered by some seriously talented Frost musicians. Fame, Apparently, Has Always Been a Problem. More than 2,000 years before Instagram, Erostratus burned down one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World simply so people would remember his name. A Fuego, part of Miami’s 40th International Hispanic Theatre Festival, takes that ancient bit of narcissism and runs with it in a wickedly satirical Spanish-language verse monologue. Playwright-performer Pablo Macho Otero skewers his own megalomania—and ours—in a very modern meditation on the lengths people will go to leave their mark. The Titanic Rises. As UM comes back to school, so do the bands at Titanic Brewing Company, the neighborhood brewpub that has been pairing beer with live music since long before some of those students were born. Frix & Friends takes over Saturday night with a genre-hopping mix shaped by Miami, New York, Colombia and Mexico—and plenty of room for musical surprises. Shakespeare, With the Forest Turned Loose. Sueño, part of Miami’s 40th International Hispanic Theatre Festival, distills A Midsummer Night’s Dream into a four-actor whirlwind of mistaken desires, magical meddling, music, poetry and physical comedy. It’s playful, romantic and family-friendly—and a reminder that sometimes people are most honest about what they want when nobody sensible is watching. Make Your Yard for the Birds. Tropical Audubon’s Master Gardeners will put you to work helping tend its Bird-Friendly Demonstration Garden and the near-native grounds of the Steinberg Nature Center. Along the way, learn which native plants attract birds and pollinators, how to evict the invasives and how to create a little wildlife habitat of your own, whether you have a yard, patio or just a balcony. High Class. Low Price. New World Symphony opens its season with a pay-what-you-wish concert at the New World Center. Ten bucks? Fine. A C-note? Also fine. Guitar virtuoso JIJI takes on Rodrigo’s famously fiery Concierto de Aranjuez, and you get a first-rate orchestra in one of Miami’s best concert halls for whatever your wallet says the evening is worth. Let the Winds Blow. Frost Symphonic Winds opens its season with a free Sunday-afternoon concert. Craig S. McKenzie conducts, and with a full symphonic wind ensemble filling Gusman Concert Hall, this is another one of those first-rate cultural outings that costs exactly nothing. Sunny With a Chance of Existential Dread. Fresno weather girl Stacey is paid to smile through forecasts for a planet that seems increasingly determined to prove her wrong. In the blistering dark comedy Weather Girl, that relentlessly sunny disposition begins to crack—and something more primal emerges. Named one of The New York Times’ best plays of 2025, the play gets its regional premiere at GableStage before a planned screen adaptation. GableStage at The Biltmore, 1200 Anastasia Ave. 9/25–10/18. Just 90 Miles Away. Grammy and Latin Grammy winner Aymée Nuviola opens Hispanic Heritage Month with 90 Millas, her musical journey across the short stretch of water—and enormous emotional distance—between Miami and Cuba. Salsa, son, timba, jazz and bolero carry a program about memory, family roots and the Cuban culture generations have kept alive on this side of the Florida Straits. Another Free Cultural Gem. The Lamar Louise Curry Concert Series returns to First UMC Coral Gables with the Allie Biancoviso Jazz Orchestra, and an evening that moves easily among jazz, contemporary sounds and Cuban influence. Original compositions and arrangements share the program with familiar favorites, with plenty of room for the orchestra’s individual players to shine. Free. Good Doc, Bad Doc. Dr. Henry Jekyll has a perfectly reasonable idea: separate the good in mankind from the evil. What could possibly go wrong? Jekyll & Hyde brings Robert Louis Stevenson’s gothic tale to the stage with murder, obsession, split personalities and a thunderous pop-rock score as Jekyll’s experiment unleashes an alter ego he can no longer control. Follow the Yellow Brick Road. You know the crew, but Actors’ Playhouse is giving their trip to Oz a fresh musical spin in this adaptation by Jim Eiler. There’s still a tornado, a Wicked Witch and a Wizard who may—or may not—have all the answers, but this funny new production gives even those who know the story by heart another reason to follow that yellow brick road. Save the Date. The Pianist Can Come Later. Chopin for All announced its new concert season dates, with the first free Sunday afternoon performance November 8 at Granada Church. The artist hasn’t been announced yet, but last season brought a parade of top-ranked pianists, so it’s okay to claim the date before you know who will be sitting at the keyboard. Summer Splash. The City of Miami has 12 aquatic facilities including the new Verneka Sturrup Silva pool at Elizabeth Virrick Park in Coconut Grove. The pool is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.
