Public Meeting Monday, July 29, 6:30-8 p.m.—In Person and Online

by Hank Resnik

District 7 Commissioner Raquel Regalado, in cooperation with the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), will host a public meeting with updates on the South Bayshore Drive project, which will redesign and rebuild the segment of the roadway between Darwin St. and Mercy Way. The project is in a final stage of design and public input preceding construction. This public meeting was previously scheduled for June 12. However, it was rescheduled for July 29 upon request by Commissioner Regalado to allow ample time for her to further discuss project details with community stakeholders.

The meeting will be held in person on Mon., July 29, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, 3747 Main Highway.  It will also be available online, where preregistration is required and available through this link.

Topic and focus of the meeting: South Bayshore Drive project improvements consist of, but are not limited to, roadway reconstruction, new drainage, new pump station at David Kennedy Park, new lighting, new signing and pavement markings, new pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and new landscape. Meeting presenters include DTPW staff involved in the project and members of the design team from Kimley-Horn. County Officials at the meeting will include Commissioner Regalado and Jimmy Morales, Chief Operating Officer.

Where we’ll be

Island Adventures

Shake-A-Leg Miami can take you, your date or your family by boat, kayak or sailboat to a small island near their waterfront headquarters.  It’s free but signing up ahead of time is required…two days ahead usually works.  A great way to splash around.  Bring a picnic…and sunscreen!

Last week’s paddle board note inspired one reader:  Rent a paddleboard in Peacock Park and bring a picnic over to the north side of Clarington Island, go ashore and hike to an elevated tiki hut on the eastern end of this primitive island.  There are no services, water or restrooms on the island, so bring everything you’ll need and make doubly sure that you take all your trash when you leave.  (Clarington Island is the spoils island south of the Sailing Club’s mooring field.)

West Grove Farmers Market

A new Little Bahamas Foodie and Farmers Market opens today (Friday 7/12) adjacent to St Matthew Community Baptist Church, 3616 Day Ave.  The market is open on Fridays 5:00-9:00 PM and Sundays 3:00-9:00 PM. Totally walk- or bike-able.

Mango Fest

For almost 30 years, the Mango Festival at Fairchild Tropical Gardens has inspired mango lovers with its exotic flavors and activities.  Mango icees anyone?  Paid admission is required.  Saturday and Sunday, July 13-14, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Ice Cream Quest

In the hot summer nights, we’re always looking for ice cream treats for the kids.  Share your favorite spots with us here and we’ll put together a list for a future Spotlight edition.  And speaking of hot…

A Hot Agenda

This Monday evening, the Climate Resilience Committee meets at City Hall at 6:00 PM.  A crisply run meeting, the group tries to guide City policies on climate change threats and advises on waterfront issues.  This week the City’s Heat Plan is on the agenda.  Public input is sought.
