Dear Editor,
Once again, I am disappointed by the recent misrepresentation in the Coconut Grove Spotlight article “The Case of the Missing Benches.”
The article published this past week misquoted my statement, leading to erroneous conclusions surrounding the park benches at Big Hill Park.
The story stated I “cast blame” on Commissioner Ken Russell’s administration when he was not mentioned in our communication at all. In fact, I only knew it was a previous administration, not any one in particular.
For clarity, the original statement provided was as follows: ‘The previous administration removed the benches after a nearby resident complained about the significant loitering the newly installed benches were causing. I can confirm that the city still has these benches in storage and can replace them should the residents want them back. At this time, we have not received numerous requests for the return of the benches, but if we do, we will gladly address the matter at that time.’
Our local media must accurately represent the facts to foster open access to government, as well as to ensure informed and constructive discussions in the community. It is our responsibility to remain transparent and open with our constituents so that they are informed and educated on our administration and its actions.
It is my hope that representations of my stance in the future remain honest and accurate. I encourage residents to contact my office directly if they have any further questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Commissioner Damian Pardo
City of Miami, District 2
