VolunteerCleanup.org is looking for up to 5,000 people to pick up trash and other debris from Miami-Dade’s coastline as part of the Ocean Conservancy’s 39th annual International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday September 21.
Volunteers can chose from 70 cleanup sites around the county including four in Coconut Grove — Vizcaya, Kennedy Park, Peacock Park and Clarington Island off Dinner Key.
“Biscayne Bay and our Beaches are tragically inundated by human-made plastic ocean trash that negatively impacts wildlife, our food supply, real estate values and our economy,” said VolunteerCleanup.Org co-founder Dave Doebler.
Last year’s cleanup event attracted 3,000 volunteers who collected more than 22,000 pounds of debris from 60 locations.
“This year, we are also using the [International Coastal Cleanup] to highlight the vast amount of trash left on the islands of Biscayne Bay by boaters, and emphasizing the new Leave No Trace campaign for Biscayne Bay spoil islands,” said Dara Schoenwald, Executive Director of VolunteerCleanup.org.
