Dear Spotlight Readers,
Six months and 52 issues ago your neighborhood Spotlight transitioned from the work of a single exemplary Grovite—Hank Resnick—to a community news organization run by a board of seasoned journalists and professionals. New technology now enables first class writers to deliver hyper-local and personally relevant news twice a week. Professionals and Pulitzer prizewinners now investigate and write regularly, including Francisco Alvarado, Carlos Frias, Mike Clary, Mary Ann Gibbs, Dave Villano, Don Finefrock and Patrick Farrell.
Your Spotlight also helps build the careers of young journalists by teaming with U-Miami’s and FIU’s journalism programs. And always the voices of readers—you perhaps—are featured in editorials, letters and comments.
The list of stories being researched is long and the need for probing investigations strong. What happens near our homes is more important than ever. So too is the Spotlight’s mission to deliver factual, unbiased professional and ethical journalism and bring to us all the news and articles that affect our community and our quality of life. More can be done with your help.
Here’s the pitch. Like Hank, Spotlight publishers and editors donate their work and expertise for free. But Spotlight tech, production and writing staff are paid for their good and meaningful works. Give Miami Day provided us all an opportunity to support the non-profits that improve the lives of our community.
Spotlight readership has doubled, as your feedback has guided ever-improving independent investigations and factual journalism for you, your family and your neighbors. Today we ask you to do what you can, give what makes sense for you, click this link to contribute to the Spotlight and make the Coconut Grove we love better for us all. Thank you.
