To the Editor:
Dade Heritage Trust is deeply alarmed and profoundly disheartened by the latest structural failure at the historic Coconut Grove Playhouse, which resulted in the collapse of a portion of the third floor and now threatens the integrity of the building’s iconic façade. There will undoubtedly be investigations and efforts to assign blame.
But regardless of who bears ultimate responsibility, the obligation now is clear: Miami-Dade County, in coordination with city, as well as the contractor, architect and engineer, must act swiftly and transparently to stabilize the structure and fully restore the Playhouse’s 1927 front façade – faithfully honoring the original design by renowned architect Richard Kiehnel.
Should any further damage occur to the façade, we expect an unequivocal and immediate commitment to rebuild it exactly as it stood in 1927.
