  1. I hope the house gets restored. It’s a significant piece of West Grove / Little Bahamas history.

If a hands-on volunteer restoration effort gets organized, please let me know. I’m a DIY kinda guy.

  2. What a timely article! One way or another, it looks like the re-development of the Coconut Grove Playhouse property is about to happen. And that is going to have an impact — for good or very bad –on the adjoining residential neighborhood of Little Bahamas and especially Charles Avenue/Evangelist Street where the Mariah Brown House sits just 500 ft away.

John Dorschner mentions the U of M architecture students who rebuilt the Mariah Brown House. I got to know them well, and at least three of them are still here as successful architects. One is the director of Planning and Zoning for Doral. They were part of a UM project under the direction of the late Samina Qaereshi and Richard Shepard to revitalize the West Grove pursuant to the 2002 Grand Avenue Vision Plan (see link).

This story brings back so many memories for me. Who else remembers the Saturday night when bleachers were erected on the parking lot at Grand and Douglas so the U of M film school students could project a full-length movie on the wall of Gil’s Spot Bar across the street? That documentary had student interviews of West Grove residents, and of their fellow students, power tools in hand, standing on the rafters of the Mariah Brown House.

Great old Herald journalists never die… they just start writing for the Spotlight! We’ve now got Dorschner and Rabin. Who will the Spotlight resurrect next? ‘Cause we need ‘em now more than ever.
