Dive in! Pools are opening, dogs will soak and shake, and there are plenty of rooms where laughter or music will loosen things up. The Grove feels like it’s in mid-splash—loose, social, a little unpredictable. (Can a dog do a cannonball?)
So don’t stay dry. Take the plunge somewhere—into a crowd, a conversation, a pool, a ridiculous dog gathering, a room where friendships start and spread. Dogs shake it off without a second thought; people take a little longer, but it works the same way. Show up, get immersed, and let the ripple effect handle the rest.
Friday April 24, Arbor Day
The World’s funniest comedian might be on stage tonight in the Grove. But you’ll only find out if you’re there. The Coconut Grove Comedy Festival showcases more than 100 comedians with performances at eight venues. Festival passes are modestly priced, kids free (with adult guidance, because after 5:30 p.m. adult themes are permitted). Full schedule and very modestly-priced tickets.
Plant more than a couch potato on Arbor Day. The City of Miami’s Urban Forestry Program will plant a new tree on public right-of-way if residents suggest a location and the site checks out, which is a fairly civilized way to get more shade on the block without personally wielding a shovel. You take a photo and pick up the phone. They pick up the shovels. Such a deal! Information online.
Put all those envy-inducing photos you’ve been sending friends up north to better use. The City Nature Challenge turns casual nature gawking into community science: Grovites can photograph or record wild plants and animals, then upload the evidence and help document the region’s biodiversity with everyone else who also stopped to admire a lizard, leaf, or suspiciously glamorous flower. Throughout South Florida, continues through April 27.
Saturday April 25
Hidden gem: a DIY dog wash station with a hose and a wading-pool splash spot where puppies can shake, prance, and generally romp mud-free. Drying off remains a bring-your-own-towel, brace-for-impact kind of operation, but still—this is the sort of humble public amenity that deserves a small round of applause. Blanche Park, 3001 Shipping Avenue at the intersection of Virginia Street. Daylight hours. The wash station hides mid-span on the south fence.
Independent Bookstore Day is the annual excuse to wander the stacks a little longer, fall for a cover on impulse, try a Blind Date with a Book, hunt for the hidden Golden Ticket, and walk out feeling faintly smug about supporting a place with actual personality. In Coconut Grove’s Books & Books, any book purchase also gets 10% off a drink at BÁNH, which is as good a reason as any to keep the outing going. Books & Books, 3409 Main Highway. Free to browse.
Jazzin’ The Grove returns with Spring Swing to Armbrister Park. Picnic-blanket-perfect to gather with friends, a cooler and lawn chairs and kick back to chill with four acts. Performances start at 4:30, with Nicole Henry headlining at 7:45. Armbrister Park, 4000 Grand Avenue. Free, but please register in advance.
Live jazz, a full band, and a room jamming with melody. “Jazz in the Grove” brings DT & Friends with The Harden Project for a night that is both smooth and spirited, depending on how close you are to the stage and how long you stay. St. Paul CDC, 3680 Thomas Avenue, Miami. 5:30 p.m. $35. Saturday, April 25.
Birdstock concerts close out the conservation season featuring Grove favorites. Dave Bricker and Bruce Turkel, Acoustic Anarchy, and Anhinga-Anhinga take the stage for a night of Americana, blues, folk, Florida-soaked originals, food truck provisions, and drinks, all in support of stewardship of the Steinberg Nature Center grounds. Tropical Audubon Society, 5530 Sunset Drive. 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Info. Modest donation. Kids free.
Sunday April 26
Show up early and say you knew them when. The New World Symphony’s Side-by-Side Concert puts three dozen middle and high school musicians on stage with the Fellows, and they go straight at the big stuff, including a closing Ride of the Valkyries that will marvel. Featured soloist Amanda Nuñez, age 12, already carries herself like someone who’s been here before, leading the Florida Youth Orchestra’s principal group and stacking competition wins across Florida. New World Center, 500 Seventeenth Street, Miami Beach. 7:30 p.m. Tickets are Pay-what-you-wish.
Monday April 27
Toot toot! Who knew — free trolley service can get you almost anywhere in the city. Got an opinion? Raise your hand and the trolley will stop for it. A series of community meetings on the Trolley Master Plan will air out routes, frequency, and even things like those still-noisy diesel engines in public. MDC Gibson Education Center, 3629 Grand Avenue. Monday 4/27 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Free.
End Earth Month in full plant passion. The Tropical Fern and Exotic Plant Society gathers at Fairchild for a talk by rare-plant grower Nacho Duran on hybridizing anthuriums, plus the always-dangerous raffle table where exotic specimens from members’ own gardens can follow you home. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, South Entrance, Corbin Classroom A, 10901 Old Cutler Road. Refreshments and raffle at 7:15 p.m., presentation at 7:30 p.m. Free.
Step out of the usual rhythm for a couple of hours. The Coconut Grove Library Book Club meets on the fourth Monday of each month, and makes copies of the titles available in advance (and even shipped if needed—just call ahead). Upcoming selections include Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou on Monday 4/27 and The Penguin Lessons by Tom Michell on Monday 5/18. Coconut Grove Branch Library, 2875 McFarlane Road from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Free. Email Librarian Jennifer Hernandez for info.
Tuesday April 28
Slow it down for a minute and see what follows. A free Qigong class at the Woman’s Club offers an easy entry into gentle, flowing movement—breathing, balance, and just enough focus to quiet the noise without trying too hard. Led by Carol White, it’s open to anyone curious, rusty, or simply in need of a reset that doesn’t involve a screen. Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, 2985 South Bayshore Drive. 9:30 a.m. Free tickets here.
Step into the Grove as it looked fifty years ago. Notice any changes? The Barnacle, the County Library’s Special Collections, and the Coconut Grove Sailing Club team up for a 16mm screening night, anchored by Coconut Grove, 1974—a 28-minute time capsule tracing the civic life that shaped the place long before today’s versions showed up. It’s part history lesson, part outdoor movie night. So cool that you’ll cheer for the places you know. Coconut Grove Sailing Club, 2990 South Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove. 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 28. Full program of five short films. Free.
Wednesday April 29
Artists’ Days at the Woman’s Club leans into that old-school, come-as-you-are creative energy—paint, sketch, stitch, or just show up and see what happens in a room where making things is the whole point. It’s relaxed, a little retro, and open to anyone willing to try. Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, 2985 South Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove. 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. $10 suggested donation. Every Wednesday.
Plain words and honest questions are front and center as GRACE and partner organizations bring residents together to talk plainly about development in Village West—what’s happening, who it affects, and how to make sure the people who live here aren’t pushed out of it. History, current reality, and an open floor allows voices to carry some weight. Greater St. Paul AME Church, 3680 Thomas Avenue, Coconut Grove. 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Priceless.
No one is more interesting than you, and the world should get a chance to find out. The Grove Chamber’s evening mixer is the venue with wine, light bites, and cheerful professional mingling that could let you shine. Members get in free with a guest, non-members can buy their way into the conversation, and everyone gets a shot at leaving better connected than they arrived. Magie Wine Bar, 3540 Main Highway, Coconut Grove. 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. $25 for non-members. Info, RSVP and admission here.
When you hear the words ‘Lando’ and ‘Oscar’ and there’s only one possible image that roars into your brain, then you already know where this is going. And fast. McLaren F1 takes over Regatta Harbour for a full fan zone built around race week—showruns with real cars, simulators that test your nerve, garage-style displays, the 2025 Constructors’ Trophy, and giant screens carrying every session live so you don’t miss a millisecond. It runs all week, so you can drop in, double back, and stay as long as the noise holds you. Regatta Harbour, 3415 Pan American Drive. Fans zones are free. Through Sunday, May 3.
Thursday April 30
Now that your nature high has kicked in, take that outside voice indoors. The Climate Resilience Committee meets at City Hall, with public comment spoken or written invited from anyone ready to move from admiring the trees to speaking up about what happens to them next. Miami City Hall, 3500 Pan American Drive. 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 30. Agenda will be published here.
Not all the nightlife is downtown. Peak spring migration is moving overhead right now, and those bright nighttime city lights are more hazard than welcome—disorienting birds and leading to deadly building collisions. Tropical Audubon Society is asking residents and building managers to turn off or block non-essential lights from 11:00 p.m. to sunrise through Thursday 5/15, and is actively recruiting volunteers to help document bird collisions across Miami-Dade, especially in higher-rise corridors like Coconut Grove. Free. More info and sign up here.
Join the first splash at a pool that’s been waiting for its moment. The new Verneka Sturrup Silva Pool at Virrick Park gets a proper welcome with a neighborhood-style pool party—families, music, food, and the kind of cannonball energy that tends to take over once the water’s in play. Virrick Park, 3255 Plaza Street. 10:30 a.m. Saturday, 5/2.
Yes. You deserve to be smug when you join this gang. Head out by boat to Clarington Island with the Coconut Grove Sailing Club and spend the morning hauling trash, protecting Biscayne Bay. Closed-toe shoes required, registration is a must, and students can pick up four community service hours along the way. Coconut Grove Sailing Club, 2990 South Bayshore Drive. Check-in Saturday 5/2, from 8:30 to 8:45 a.m.; departure at 9:00 a.m., return around 11:00 a.m. Free. Info and required pre-registration here.
A world built for dogs? Well, they already know that’s true. Prove it to yourself and escort Fido to Woofstock at the Barnacle. There your best friend will find lure courses, kiddie pools, doggy yoga, a play zone, vendors, music, and enough sniff-and-greet action to wear out even the social ones. There’s a Blessing of the Animals in the mix, plus food and drinks for the humans, and it all supports Paw Patrol Animal Rescue and the park. The Barnacle Historic State Park, 3485 Main Highway. 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. $7 admission, free for kids 5 and under. Sunday, May 3. Advanced waiver required.
Golden Ticket holders are drawn to the virtuosity of the free-for-all Chopin concert series. The next recital performs Sunday, 5/3 at 3:00 p.m. Granada Church, 950 University Drive, Coral Gables. Register for tickets.
Too much of a good thing. A little fertilizer may make the plants greener. A lot of it can help turn the bay into soup. Miami’s fertilizer prohibition period starts May 15, when anything containing nitrogen or phosphorus is banned through October 31, a seasonal timeout meant to keep runoff, algae blooms, and fish-killing muck out of local waterways. Information online.
Your pup could break the world record. For cuteness–that’s a given. But Chewy is turning Bark Park into a full-on dog-day spectacle with pool dips, cool treats, games, prizes, and a frankly heroic amount of tail-wagging chaos as pups and their people try to set the record for the largest dog pool party. The Underline, 4500 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Coral Gables. 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 9. RSVP required
B-I-N-G-O! The insider hipsters won’t talk about it in public, but Bingo Night at the Woman’s Club gathers the glitterati of the Grove for retro fun. Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, 2985 South Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove. Doors at 6:30 p.m., games at 7:00 p.m. $15 admission, $10 door plus cards. Pro Tip: The table in the far back corner has the hottest players. Thursday, 5/28.
