  1. “Steiner described PZAB’s decision as one step toward implementing Miami’s Grand Avenue Vision Plan, published in 2002, and the West Grove Vision Plan.”

I attended the Charrette where those Vision Plans were created. Yes, it is a step and I support it, even though it’s two decades late in coming.

There is another step possible for “…preserving the historic character and affordability of the neighborhood, amid ongoing concerns about gentrification across the West Grove.” A draft petition was presented at the Ministerial Alliance last month, asking West Grove churches and civic organizations to join together to demand the partial closure of Charles Avenue (aka historic Evangelist Street) to thru traffic from the historic Charlotte Jane Cemetery on Douglas Road down to the historic Mariah Brown House and historic Odd Fellows West Grove Library (now a church).

On “lower” Charles Avenue, the redeveloped Coconut Grove Playhouse, including the proposed adjacent hotel and renovated Stirrup B & B would still have access from Main Hiway. However, a new pedestrian-friendly 3 ft coral rock wall across Charles Avenue would prevent cut-thru traffic, including Ubers and service trucks, from using and abusing the historic residential neighborhood.

“Upper “ Charles Avenue could become part of the “Mixed Use Cultural District” already in the Neighborhood Conservation District 2 (NCD2) which was the offspring of the two long-abandoned Vision Plans now before PZAB.

Maybe there can finally be something that defiantly says: “We built Coconut Grove and we are staying.”
