Cool kids check their voter reg.
Before diving into fall plans, take 60 seconds to make sure you’re still on the voter rolls. About one in seven local voters got purged since last spring — no joke. And those old vote-by-mail requests? Wiped clean on January 1. The next election is Tuesday 11/4 — just 60 days away. Old schoolers can call 305-499-VOTE (8683) to check your status by phone, or check online here. Ready to vote by mail again? Request a ballot here: while there’s still time. What’s the last possible day to check? The deadline? Oh, please. This is one thing you don’t want to leave to the last minute. Think hours, not days. Days, not weeks. Weeks, not months. Pick up the phone or tap a couple buttons — it’s too easy not to.
And speaking of adulting…
Start adulting early.
Teens as young as 16 can pre-register to vote— so when their 18th birthday hits, they’re ready to go. It’s quick, it’s smart, and it’s a solid move for anyone looking to ease into adulthood with a little purpose. And if there’s a freshly minted 18-year-old in your family, this is your opportunity to give ’em a nudge (or a swift kick) and get that registration in. It’s never too late to start adulting. Register or pre-register here.
Where movement begins and art flows.
The Kampong hosts a morning of renewal and reflection to close out The Blue in Our Veins exhibition — blending movement, creativity, and calm in a lush garden setting. Guests will start with gentle bodywork, move into a hands-on art workshop, pause for a meditative moment, and end with a guided tour of the exhibition. Light bites and refreshments provided. Bring your own yoga mat. Saturday 9/6 at 9:00 a.m. The Kampong, 4013 Douglas Road. Tickets here
¿Hablas español? Sí, tú puedes.
A laid-back Spanish Conversation Circle is forming at the Coconut Grove Branch Library, open to adults of all skill levels who want to practice speaking in a relaxed, encouraging setting. Whether you’re brushing up or just getting started, it’s a great way to meet new people and expand your language chops. Thursday 9/11 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Coconut Grove Branch Library, 2875 McFarlane Road. Free. Ages 18+. Questions? Call 305-442-8695 or email [email protected].
Pass the pass.
The public library system might be the most underrated fan club in town — and here’s another reason to join. Did you know your library card unlocks free passes to local museums and public art spaces? It’s true. The Lowe Art Museum is always free (Thanks, Beaux-Arts!), but beyond that, you can gain access to cultural gems across the county — just by asking. Vizcaya Museum? Included. From the Beach to the Redland to the historic Curtis Mansion — there’s a free pass for that. Explore the full list here. Library Card Sign-up Month is already in progress and you can do that online too.
But what if you’re home wi-fi is on the blink? They’ve got an answer for that with…
Wi-Fi on wheels.
The library’s gone way beyond books — now you don’t even have to go inside to get connected. Just pull into the parking lot at Virrick Park Branch Library (3255 Plaza Street) and tap into the drive-up Wi-Fi, or settle on a bench, watch the new pool being built, and scroll in style. Details here. And for a peek at the pool now being built, check this out.
Hot off the press.
Your library card now comes with front-page access — read The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal anytime, anywhere, totally free. Just log in through the library’s website or mobile app to catch the headlines and dig through archives. Start reading here.
While we’re talking news: the Coconut Grove Spotlight newsletter is always free and, conveniently, already in your hands. Want to help it shine brighter? Volunteer here or chip in a little coin to keep things humming.
Calling all World Cup wannabes.
Speaking of volunteers… maybe it’s not too early to start thinking about the FIFA World Cup landing in North America — and Miami — next year. The volunteer portal is already live, and whether you’re in it for the soccer, the vibes, or the undeniably attractive chaos of it all, now’s the time to sign up. Get more info here.
Let them eat cake. (Lots of it.)
The South Florida Cake Swap rolls into Vizcaya Village on Saturday 9/14 with one simple rule: bring a cake, taste many. Inspired by New York’s viral Cake Picnic, this joyful potluck is hosted with the Read It & Eat It Cookbook Club and welcomes all cake styles — vegan, gluten-free, layered, loafed… just no ice cream cakes. Ingredient cards help share stories and recipes, and the event overlaps with the Vizcaya Farmers Market, with 40+ local vendors plus extras like the Bookleggers Mobile Library. Vizcaya Village, 3250 South Miami Avenue. Saturday 9/13 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Free with cake and registration required.
Strings attached — or not.
New World Symphony kicks off its season with a pay-what-you-wish concert that proves “serious music” doesn’t have to take itself too seriously. Clyne’s Stride riffs on Beethoven with a jazz edge, Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante makes a duet out of a concerto, and Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 95 keeps things intense before winking at the end. Saturday 9/13 at 7:30 p.m. New World Center, 500 17th Street, Miami Beach. Pay-what-you-wish tickets. Additional concerts Sunday 9/14 at 2:00 p.m. and Saturday 9/20 at 7:30 p.m.

So, if you’re clever with Canva, curious about calendars, or just know where the best snacks are, come join the crew. We make things happen and keep it fun while doing it.
