Authorities say a concrete wall collapsed during a home renovation Monday morning, killing a construction worker just days before his 30th birthday.
A 29-year-old man was killed this week after a concrete wall collapsed at a construction site in Coconut Grove.
The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. on Monday at 2907 SW 22nd Ave.
The victim has been identified as 29-year old Jorge Esteban Rojas. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Miami Police spokesperson Mike Vega, Rojas and other workers were attempting to knock down an exterior wall when it collapsed, pinning him underneath.
Police and Fire Rescue responded to the scene, and after several hours, the victim’s body was removed. Rojas would have celebrated his 30th birthday next week.
“To us it’s a tragic accident,” Miami Police spokesperson Mike Vega said.
The incident is being investigated by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which did not respond to the Spotlight’s request for comment.
The 1,050-square-foot home, built in 1937, was undergoing a complete remodel along with a 1,600-square-foot addition, estimated to cost $600,000.
County records show the property is owned by a limited liability corporation. The City of Miami’s Building Department shows the owner as Alvaro Duque of Miami, who could not be reached for comment.
A.K.A and Construction Company, which lists an office on Coral Way and is named by the city as the contractor of record, did not respond to requests for comment.
