The Sunday night shooting on the corner of Douglas Road and Florida Avenue was the first violent crime in Coconut Grove since August, police said.
A man was shot and injured early Sunday evening in a burst of gunfire on Douglas Road in Coconut Grove, ending a six-month stretch of relative peace in the neighborhood and sparking an ongoing police investigation.
Police were tipped to the shooting by a ShotSpotter alert at 3357 Douglas Road. By the time they arrived, however, the victim was gone. Police caught up with him in stable condition at Mercy Hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound.
Police described the shooting as “an isolated incident” between two men on the northeast corner of Douglas Road and Florida Avenue, across the street from Ike’s Food Center, where neighborhood residents often gather during the day and at night.
The shooting, which police said was the first violent crime in six months in Coconut Grove, is under investigation. Neither man has been identified.
“We’ve got what we need to help us with this case,” Miami Police officer Nick Dennis told residents Monday night at a meeting of the Coconut Grove Village West Homeowners and Tenants Association (HOATA). “I can’t get too much into it but, like I said, for our side, the investigation looks good.”
The shooting happened shortly before 8 p.m. on Sunday. The rapid burst of gunfire – 12 shots in all, Dennis said – alarmed at least one nearby homeowner, who suspected the shooting might be gang-related.
Dennis assured her it was not. “No, it was an isolated incident,” he said.
Dennis said the shooting was the first in the Grove since August 6 when 30-year-old Robert Denardes Whittle Jr. was shot and killed inside Ike’s market.
Police arrested Keith Leebrooks Wilson, 33, two weeks later in connection with the shooting and charged him with second-degree murder.

Two other shootings – one fatal – occurred earlier in 2025 within a block of Douglas Road. In March, an 18-year-old male was shot and killed during a suspected drug deal in the 3700 block of Percival Avenue. A 17-year-old Grove resident was charged with his murder three months later.
Less than a week after that shooting, a male in his 30s was shot and critically injured at the corner of Plaza Street and Florida Avenue.

More recently, however, the Grove has boasted the lowest crime numbers in the City of Miami for months on end, even as the city as a whole has reported notable downward trends in violent crime.
“We’ve had a nice stretch with no violent crime,” Dennis said. He attributed that in part to enhanced law enforcement along the Douglas Road corridor.
“We have been pretty proactive in that area, as far as making arrests, as far as narcotics,” he said. “There have been a ton of arrests made there,” Dennis added. “If you tend to pass by there, you kind of see the reduction, as far as people hanging out on the corner.”
