A Giant Oak, an Illegal Removal and a Not-So-Giant Fine

The remains of a southern live oak after it was cut down at 1836 SW 23rd Terrace. An online tree-age calculator puts the tree’s estimated age at about 284 years, although estimating the age of a living tree from its diameter is imprecise. (Anita Li for the Spotlight)

  1. I always admired this beautiful oak while walking my dog (now the site looks like a war zone). Estimated to be 284 years old, this tree began growing around 1742 (Nearly three centuries of history gone). Surely, our irreplaceable trees deserve better protection.
