If you’re staying put in the Grove for the long Thanksgiving weekend, you’ve already outsmarted half the country. While everyone else is shuffling through security lines and pretending airport coffee is “fine,” the neighborhood is slipping effortlessly into a weekend that’s actually worth showing up for. Shop Small Saturday sets the tone, Sunday turns up the sparkle, and the Grove quietly proves — again — that sometimes the smartest travel plan is not traveling at all.
And then, just when you think the weekend has shown you all its tricks, the Grove tosses in a few more reasons to stay local. U-Miami’s photojournalism students are unveiling their Village Visionaries photo series — portraits of the Grovites whose character keeps this place interesting — a perfect reminder that the neighborhood’s magic comes from its people. Add in the gingerbread spectacle at the Ritz, the Golf Cart Holiday Parade, and the Christmas Tree Lighting, and suddenly the only thing you’ll be missing by staying home is airport turbulence.
There’s a lot going on during Shop Small Saturday. Coconut Grove’s independent boutiques, cafés, and artisans team up for all sorts of fun (and deals!) throughout the day. Live performances from Yacht Rock Band from noon to 6 p.m., family-friendly activities, and a little extra holiday cheer. Grab some brunch at participating spots and score a branded stemless wine glass to remember the day. Maria Stella, a local artist, sketches watercolor portraits on Commodore Plaza. Betcha Amazon.com can’t do that! Saturday 11/29 from 10:00 a.m. Free.
Garden Yoga at The Kampong. Coming down from your Thanksgiving sugar high takes more than wishful thinking, so here’s a gentler option: an afternoon yoga session with Diana Botta of Resonance Flow. The Kampong, 4013 South Douglas Road, Saturday 11/29 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Registration required with modest cost.

Rootwork: The Botanically Inspired Art of Naomi Fisher. Naomi Fisher’s long love affair with Miami’s plant life takes center stage in this solo exhibition at The Kampong. Imagined Worlds at the Lowe. Innovation in art has been happening for centuries, and the Lowe Art Museum offers a literal lesson in perspective. This exhibition looks back to the Renaissance moment when Brunelleschi and Alberti introduced linear perspective, opening the door for Western painters to create imaginary worlds through landscapes, window frames, stone walls, and dramatic horizons. These Old Master works pull you deep into the artist’s mind. Lowe Art Museum, 1301 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables, during regular museum hours. Free.
