Safer Streets: A Simple Solution

A 5th-grade student at St. Stephen’s finds an easy way to make crossing the street safer in Coconut Grove. City officials love the idea.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava grabbed a bright orange flag this week and crossed Main Highway with Lucas Kwiatkowski, the 10-year-old who proposed crossing flags for downtown Coconut Grove.

After teacher Kate Hamm was struck by a vehicle last spring while crossing Main Highway near Greenstreet Café, pedestrian safety became top of mind for lots of folks in Coconut Grove. Including 10-year-old Lucas Kwiatkowski.

Unlike most folks, though, Lucas actually did something about it.

Local Officials to Address “Live Local” Housing Law

Local residents are invited to a panel discussion Saturday Aug. 31 of the Live Local Act, a new state law that some critics say could supercharge high-rise development in  Coconut Grove.

Explaining the law and its impact will be State Rep. Vicki Lopez, State Senator Alexis Calatayud, City of Miami District 2 Commissioner Damian Pardo and Miami land-use attorney Anthony De Yurre.

Signed into law a year ago, the Live Local Act offers tax benefits and other incentives to developers who set aside some units within their projects for lower-priced workforce housing. But the law also allows developers, in many cases, to sidestep local zoning codes, raising concerns that out-of-scale developments could unfairly impact existing communities.

The discussion will be held at the Vizcaya Historic Garage located at 3250 South Miami Avenue in Coconut Grove from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
