A $2 million shoreline project aims to protect Coconut Grove’s eponymous bayfront from rising seas—but with no construction funds, a $465,000 design tab, and plans to remove mature palms, critics are asking: Is it worth it?

By Jenny Jacoby

Peacock Park is set for a climate resilience makeover — but not without controversy.

The $2 million shoreline stabilization project, championed by the City of Miami’s Office of Capital Improvements (OCI), comes with a $465,000 design and permitting price tag, no confirmed construction funding, and the planned removal of a row of mature palm trees from Coconut Grove’s iconic waterfront park.

After more than two years of planning, city officials are finalizing plans for a 450-foot-long, 12-foot-wide landscaped berm to act as a natural seawall. The berm, expected to reach at least six feet in height, is pitched as a hybrid vegetated berm system—a combination of clean fill, FRP sheet piles, riprap, and native vegetation.

The system is designed to stabilize the shoreline, absorb wave energy, and support intertidal habitat, while still maintaining public access to the water, city officials say. Construction is tentatively scheduled to start in  July 2026 — pending permitting and secured funding.

To Morales, yoga is so much more than a form of exercise – it’s a way to give back, both to community and self.

By Amanda Clegg

When Natalie Morales teaches her weekly yoga classes in Coconut Grove, she defies the typical image of a yoga instructor.

She doesn’t arrive in activewear – she wears a breezy button-down instead – and she guides her class with equal parts of motivation and humor, teasing students for looking too serious between poses.

“It doesn’t matter what way you move,” she tells them. “As long as it’s special.”

Morales herself has taken that advice to heart, and the mantra she repeats during class – “do it your own way” – might just as well describe her teaching style, and her life.

“I like to focus on the fun, the joy of movement,” Morales tells the Spotlight. “So that’s what I call my classes – funyasa.”

Gun violence struck Coconut Grove again Wednesday, killing one man and injuring another on Douglas Road, not far from the site of two earlier shootings in 2025.

By Jenny Jacoby

A man was shot and killed early Wednesday evening at the corner of Douglas Road and Florida Avenue in West Grove. The shooter, identified as a male, is still on the loose.

Miami police say the victim was reportedly shot twice. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where he died from his injuries. His name has not been released.

The shooting followed an argument between the victim and gunman, a police source tells the Spotlight.

Another man received minor injuries during the incident but refused treatment from rescue workers at the scene and declined transport to a hospital.
